What Is Special Waste?

Special waste is a waste that requires special processing, trained people, and/or special disposal methods. A waste can be a special waste because of its quantity, concentration, or physical, chemical, or biological properties.

Sample special wastes:

Commercial / industrial waste: this is non-hazardous industrial process waste, processed infectious waste and potentially harmful waste requiring special treatment. For example: treated sludge, ash, filters, sandblasting medium and dusty wastes. Commercial / industrial waste should not contain "free" liquids and should be disposed of in a container if air can transport it.

Liquid / semi-solid waste: These wastes are mixed with absorbent materials for useful use and proper disposal in landfills. Examples include industrial liquids, coolants, cutting oils, rinsing water, latex paints and inks, food production waste, municipal waste, tank bases/mud and drilling waste.

Oil-contaminated soils: these soils are not dangerous and are contaminated with petroleum products.

Other special wastes: they require special treatment such as spill cleaning materials, non-specific products, animal carcasses, barrels and pressure vessels, fluorescent lamps and asbestos.
